Where to buy wood online or at a store?

scootergarrett asked:

I’m looking for good wood to make furniture out of. Lumber yards don’t usually have thick enough stock 8/4 and home depot is garbage so don’t say that. The one online seller that I found is a little expensive, so I’m looking for other websites that sells a wide variety of species in different thicknesses.

i dont know but i kind of like to see what i am buying. especially if it is wood for furniture making. might have to travel a few miles in the pickup but i am sure it will be well worth it.

I suggest you contact a local cabinet maker in your area. They will be knowledgeable about where to send you for the wood you’re looking for.

I live in New England and have always had local quality hardwood dealers available. Check you local yellow pages look under both “Hardwood” and “Lumber”. Also check for local sawmills. We have several local sawmills that will supply retail lumber (usually pine) that is not the typical HD/Lowes stuff. I like places that let you pick the pieces you want, just make sure you re-stack what you don’t take.

You can purchase decent wood online but shipping can be a killer and you don’t get to select the pieces you want. It might be good for small pieces of unique varieties that you can’t find locally.

My favorite local dealer is Highland Hardwood they have a great selection:

You can try woodfinder (link below) but they don’t seem to have all of the suppliers in my area.

You might want to consider a construction goods salvage store. Since they don’t have a standard inventory like Lowe’s and Home Despot, you might find some interesting pieces of wood.

You could also try an antique or thrift store for some broken furniture. Older pieces tend to be made of better quality wood. They’ll sell them to you for cheap, and you can dismantle the pieces and use them to build your piece.
